What was the most impressive aspect of Oscar Piastri’s rookie season? The Sprint win in Qatar? His maiden podium at Suzuka? His ability to rise with the tide as McLaren’s mid-season makeover of the MCL60 took the team into deeper, front-running waters?
Impressive as that all was, what was arguably more so was Piastri’s calm, methodical, matter-of-factness about F1®. Mark Webber – Piastri’s manager and someone who knows a thing or two about operating in the F1® furnace, isn’t easily impressed or someone who lathers mayonnaise all over his comments. His thoughts? “Yeah, it’s been a special year,” Webber said at its conclusion.
What’s next? A rare chance to consolidate; 2024 will be the first season Piastri’s not been a debutant in whatever category he’s raced since 2020. More will be expected of him this season – and you won’t be able to tell if he’s stressed by the stakes being raised.
